MaStER- Mastering Statistics and Empirical Results - objetivos Print E-mail

The proposed project aims at developing a course enabling people to cover the requirements arising from situations as the ones sketched above. People should be able to benefit from statistical data and empirical findings and they should be protected from their misuse by others or from their own misinterpretation of data or information. They should be able to:

· Read and understand statistical/empirical information correctly (for instance by knowing of important concepts like medium, standard deviation or correlation).

· Assess critically whether any conclusion drawn from statistical data by other people is correct or not. Since statistics are a wide and complex knowledge area which cannot be taught in-depth in a Grundtvig course, this can mean different things:

1. Clearly assessing that a conclusion is wrong (cases of low difficulty);

2. Assuming that a conclusion is not correct and asking for more information or remembering the information as 'uncertain' (cases of middle difficulty).

3. Asking a statistical expert for his/her judgement and, as far as this is not done, assessing the information as 'irrelevant' (cases of high difficulty).
